Morgan Rogers’ dream transfer as Arsenal eye £100m deal after Mikel Arteta’s public request

Arsenal are preparing a move for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, with the England international reportedly open to a transfer

Arsenal could find themselves in a fierce battle this summer as they attempt to lure Morgan Rogers away from Aston Villa.

A switch to the Emirates Stadium may well represent his ideal destination, with Mikel Arteta’s side anticipated to challenge for all the major trophies once more next season. Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are also tracking the situation, though the midfielder is said to be open to a switch to north London.

The Telegraph reports that Villa remain determined to rebuff approaches for Rogers and harbour no plans to part with the England international. The 23-year-old registered 26 goal contributions last season, including a goal and an assist in the Europa League final.

However, while Villa are reluctant to sell, the midfielder is understood to be contemplating a departure. His contract in Birmingham runs until 2031, with BBC Sport suggesting he would command a fee well north of £80million.

Given these circumstances, an offer in the region of £100m ought to prove sufficient to compel Villa into sanctioning the 23-year-old’s exit. Landing Rogers would represent a significant move towards a more dynamic approach for Arteta, following his confession that he wishes to model his team on Paris Saint-Germain.

Following the Gunners’ penalty shoot-out defeat to the French side last weekend, the Spaniard responded “yes” when asked whether he would integrate elements of PSG’s philosophy into his team’s future development. Emphasising the capacity to influence matches, Arteta added: “The individual action that they have for sure.”

Arsenal’s co-chair Josh Kroenke also delivered a significant statement regarding the club’s transfer window intentions. He said: “We are going to look to strengthen because we know that teams around us are going to get better. If you are not trying to continually evolve and improve, you are standing still.”

This desire for individual excellence and the hierarchy’s backing to invest could create the ideal circumstances for Arsenal to secure their target in Rogers. The 23-year-old has travelled with England to the World Cup this summer and is hoping to feature regularly for Thomas Tuchel.

Rogers could return from the United States to face a substantial transfer tussle and will probably need to determine whether to remain with Villa or make the switch to the reigning Premier League champions. However, it could require £100m for Arteta to see his transfer request granted.
