Youssef Chermiti might not have become a fan favourite with Rangers, but the striker could land the Ibrox side an astonishing transfer windfall as Galatasaray eye a move for the 22-year-old hitman.
Chermiti was signed last summer in an €8.6 million deal from Everton but struggled to impress in the Premiership as the Gers finished third.
The Portuguese did sparkle on occasion, notably grabbing a couple of doubles against Celtic in Old Firm games while he also scored a hat-trick against runners-up Hearts, but he failed to perform to that standard on a consistent basis, finishing the campaign with 15 goals.
According to Turkish media, Galatasaray are willing to fund a deal worth as much as €29m (£25m) to prise Chermiti away from Ibrox.
Any bid in this region would be something that Rangers simply could not refuse given the output of the forward last season. They are not in a position to overplay their hand, though. Galatasaray are looking at other options, including former Aston Villa hitman Jhon Duran.
Rohl hails ‘role model’ Chermiti
Rangers manager Danny Rohl has talked up Chermiti’s impact since he arrived at the club.
“Honestly, for me, Youssef is the role model for our development from October to now,” he told BBC Sport at the beginning of May.
“You see how hard he works for the group in every single game at the moment. He scores goals, he is involved in dangerous situations, he is outstanding in training at the moment, he really improved and this is fantastic to see.
“He shows a big, big character and what is also important, especially at our club, you have to understand what it means. If you work hard and you bring a lot of effort, the outcome will come. This is a good example.”
But there is doubt over how much ex-Everton man Chermiti will play if he remains at Ibrox. The Gers have already confirmed that they have secured Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland on a free transfer, offering a natural replacement in the No.9 role, while Bojan Miovski remains at the club.
Such a deal would not only be historic, it would also go some way to salvaging a bitterly disappointing transfer campaign last summer in which so much was promised yet little delivered by the comparatively big money spent on players.
Rangers’ record sale
Chermiti to Galatasaray is likely to represent a record sale for Rangers. Previously, the biggest transfer fee the Gers have received is the €23m they recouped from Ajax when Calvin Bassey made the move to the Netherlands in 2022.
Indeed, that is the only occasion they have sold a player for more than €15m.

Last season’s big deal saw Morocco international Hamza Igamane depart for Ligue 1 side Lille late in August, yet he only commanded a transfer fee of €11.5m.
Should Chermiti go for €29m to Turkey, there would be few that would argue against the value of the move from Rangers’ perspective.
