The whole footballing world was left curious on Thursday evening following the spectacular comments from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez
Florentino Perez grabbed the attention of the entire footballing world on Thursday evening with his comments regarding Real Madrid’s transfer plans.
Perez has promised that if he is re-elected as Los Blancos’ president this weekend, then he will send an offer of €150million (£129.7m) to a Champions League club for one of their “top players”, but he refused to elaborate on who that was. Straight off the bat, that rules Chelsea out given the Blues’ failure to qualify for any form of European competition.
The 79-year-old further clarified that it will “not be a Premier League player” in some extraordinary comments. Here is a summary of Perez’s statement:
“I will send a €150m bid on Tuesday for a top player from a Champions League team,” Perez said. “The official €150m will not be a Premier League player.
“The bid will be for a Cristiano Ronaldo or Kaka level player. He’s a Galactico. It will be a club-record bid – we are ready to pay over the €150m fee. It’s not a defender, it could be a midfielder or forward.”

Enzo Fernandez has been strongly linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, with the Argentine midfielder wanting to depart Chelsea in the coming months. Fernandez has hardly shied away from questions linking him with a move to Madrid this year and the Blues are open to selling him should the right offer come their way.
It’s understood that while Chelsea are not actively looking to sell the 25-year-old, the west Londoners will not block a move if a £120m offer is presented. However, if Madrid do end up buying this unnamed player for close to £130m, then that will spell bad news for Fernandez and his quest to become part of Los Blancos.
It seems highly unlikely Real Madrid, even though they are arguably the biggest football club in the world, will spend over £100m on two players this summer. As for Chelsea and new manager Xabi Alonso, it seems like a win-win situation: they either complete a club-record sale, or they keep one of their most important players and hopefully he can become happy at Stamford Bridge once again.
