The president of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa has described the forthcoming national track and field trials in Lagos as a ‘significant milestone’ ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Sports247 reports that officials of the AFN have stated that this year’s athletics trials, billed to hold from June 20th to 22nd at Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) will determine Nigeria’s athletes for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
A statement by the AFN earlier made it clear that participation in the trials is mandatory for any athlete hoping to secure a place on Team Nigeria, thereby making the Lagos event crucial for established stars and emerging talents alike.
A press release by the AFN’s media committee chairman, Maxwell Kumoye further revealed that the three-day trials will feature 32 track and field events for men and women, providing opportunities for all athletes to stake their claims for selection.
Kumoye added that AFN officials believe the arrangement will ensure that only athletes in top form contest the events while maintaining broad participation across all disciplines.
He further stated, “Athletes are expected to arrive in Lagos on Friday, June 19, while departures have been scheduled for Tuesday, June 23. Accommodation will be provided for athletes who attain required standards during qualification period.
“With national pride, international exposure and Commonwealth Games glory at stake, athletes across the country are already intensifying preparations for what is expected to be one of the most competitive national championships in recent years.
“While participation in the men’s and women’s 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres will be restricted to athletes who have achieved the prescribed qualifying standards, all other track and field events will remain open for participation.
“The trials are expected to produce thrilling contests in several events as athletes seek to book their places on the flight to Scotland. With Nigeria regarded as one of Africa’s strongest athletics nations, competition for slots is expected to be intense.”
On his part, Okowa described the trials as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s preparations for the Commonwealth Games and called on athletics stakeholders, enthusiasts and fans across the country to turn out and support the athletes.
The AFN President also used the opportunity to commend the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its continued support of the federation and expressed confidence that the event will help to identify the country’s best talents.
“All backing received from the Commission has contributed significantly to ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening athletics development and improving elite athlete performance,” Okowa reiterated.
