At least 20 people are believed to have been injured in a horror tram incident on June 2. According to the Berlin Fire Department, a tram derailed on Wartenberger Straße.
The fire department told the Berliner Morgenpost that the crash happened at 9:29 a.m. on a curve just before the Arnimstraße stop. For reasons still unknown, the tram struck an overhead line mast, tearing open one side of the vehicle. In a tweet on X, the Berlin police stated that the M5 tram had crashed into two masts. According to the police, the recovery and repair work could take several days.
BVG CEO Henrik Falk from Berlin Transport company arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after 11 a.m. to see the damage for himself . He said “We are deeply saddened by the images we have seen here. Our thoughts are with the injured and our passengers.
“The cause of the accident still needs to be clarified. Whether technical or human error or a medical emergency triggered the accident, we cannot say at the moment.”
Of the 20 injured people, 17 sustained minor injuries and three reported to be seriously hurt, according to the spokesperson.
Emergency crews remain at the scene, with 51 personnel currently in attendance. Tram services on lines M5 and M17 are suspended until further notice and are not operating between Gehrenseestraße and Falkenberg. Replacement bus services are being arranged.
