Manuel Neuer’s World Cup u-turn has given Julian Nagelsmann some good headaches this summer. But with the German legend nursing a calf injury, he will be rested for this first warm up match against Finland.
It will mean Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann, who was due to be Germany’s number 1 this summer, will start in the sticks and be given his opportunity to impress.
The bulk of Nagelsmann’s 26-man World Cup squad will be present, however Arsenal’s Kai Havertz will arrive next week, with the forward preparing for the Champions League final on Sunday.
Finland, who have had a difficult qualifying campaign of their own, placed third behind the Netherlands and Poland, arrive as opponents who will be eager to test themselves against one of the tournament favourites on home soil.
Their most recent outing was a 1-1 draw away at Cape Verde in March – that result showcases the kind of inconsistency that has defined their recent international calendar.
A damaging 1-0 home defeat to Malta in World Cup qualifying, ultimately proved costly to their own World Cup ambitions.
Nagelsmann may give opportunities to some fringe players to stake a claim for inclusion in their World Cup opener against Curucao. The likes of four-capped Jamie Leweling, Nathaniel Brown and youngster Lennart Karl could get serious game time.

Germany may well be the overwhelming favourites to land a victory in their penultimate World Cup tune up.
But history suggests this fixture is just as likely to end in a stalemate than it is in a German victory. There’s been five draws in the last 10 meetings between the two nations.
With Germany without Neuer and front man Havertz, it may take them some time to click into gear.

He’s got four goals in seven caps for his national team and offers something very different to fellow forward Havertz and Nick Woltemade.
His club form may earn himself a start against Finland. And there’s value in the striker to get on the scoresheet.
