Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has insisted that his side will not sell Josh Windass this summer following rumours that he could return to Rangers ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Windass, 32, joined Wrexham on a Bosman deal from Sheffield Wednesday last July and he won the club’s Player of the Year award after scoring 17 goals and providing seven assists in 46 appearances across all competitions in his debut campaign.
The Englishman, who spent two years at Rangers from 2016 to 2018, has been heavily linked with a return to Ibrox in recent weeks and it has been reported that a “fresh approach” has been launched as Danny Rohl looks to secure a reunion with his former Sheffield Wednesday pupil.
Rangers have already officially confirmed the signing of Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, and they are also keen to finalise a deal for Windass as they look to win the Scottish Premiership title for the first time since 2021 next year.
The likelihood of signing fellow target Joe Gelhardt has undoubtedly diminished following Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League, and Rangers are now prepared to ramp up talks to sign Windass after formalising a deal for Shankland.
However, Parkinson, who has led Wrexham from the National League to the Championship, has poured cold water on reports suggesting that his star man will leave the Racecourse Ground this summer.

“Josh is our player; he had a good season, and we are looking forward to him building on that next year. We are looking to add to the quality we have got, not lose it,” Parkinson told reporters when asked about Windass’ future (via The Herald).
“I think we would be disappointed if there wasn’t some interest in our players. It is inevitable, but we have got the key players we want on long contracts, and we are in a good position on that front.
“We are looking to build on what we did last year and improve the squad to make us really competitive again.”
Wrexham narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs this season, finishing just two points behind Hull City in sixth, and they are expected to back Parkinson in the market yet again over the summer as they look to secure promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking.
