Celtic have set their sights on a new goalkeeper this summer after the news that Kasper Schmeichel has retired from football, leaving the Scottish giants with a huge hole to fill in their squad.
Schmeichel made 88 appearances in all competitions for Celtic after joining the club in 2024 but the 39-year-old has called time on his career following a decline in form and fitness.
The Danish legend began the most recent season as Celtic’s number one keeper but he struggled with a shoulder injury that he initially picked up in March 2025 and aggravated again against Stuttgart in February, which ended up being his last appearance in football.
“When my contract with Celtic expires in June, I will stop my active football career. It is a decision that has been made for me,” Schmeichel told TV2.
“I have consulted various surgeons and experts in relation to my shoulder, and they have told me that I should not expect to return to playing top football. I have given myself a lot of thought, but I believe that now is the right time.
“I didn’t realize how bad it was in March. It’s been a long process. When I landed on it in February, I could tell it was completely crazy.”
Celtic turn to Belgian goalkeeper to replace Schmeichel
Celtic turned to Finnish goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo after Schmeichel’s injury and there is no indication that they are looking to replace the 24-year-old as a starter but there will be a need to sign a new senior shotstopper.
The Herald have claimed that interest has been resurrected in Belgian goalkeeper Jari de Busser, who was linked with a move from Go Ahead Eagles in January.
The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with the Dutch side and is thought to be available for around €3 million.
Schmeichel admitted he was disappointed at being unable to bid a true farewell to Celtic after injury cut short his career but he insisted he had no regrets over his career.
“I suppose everyone dreams of saying goodbye on the pitch, but you don’t always get what you want. I would have loved just one more match, but unfortunately that wasn’t to be.
“I’ve had so much else along the way, so football doesn’t owe me anything. I’ve had so many opportunities and things in my career. So many experiences.”
