The Trump administration has said it plans to significantly cut back on the amount of military aid it provides to NATO members as it continues its ‘America First’ approach to foreign policy.
The United States has reportedly announced plans to significantly reduce its military contributions to NATO, depriving the alliance of access to American warships, fighter jets, drones and aircraft.
Despite threatening to reduce military aid to Europe since the start of Trump’s second term, the scale of the reductions has nevertheless caught European diplomats off-guard, German title Der Spiegel has said.
While US envoy Alexander Velez-Green has reassured the EU that the US will still provide nuclear deterrence to NATO member states, Europeans are being told to fill in the gaps in their arsenals as quickly as possible.
The move comes after Trump posted a blistering rant on Truth Social back in March, in which he called allies “cowards” for refusing to join his war on Iran, and claimed “Without the U.S.A., NATO IS A PAPER TIGER!
“They didn’t want to join the fight to stop a Nuclear Powered Iran,” the president wrote. “Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices.
“So easy for them to do, with so little risk. COWARDS, and we will REMEMBER! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
