US President Donald Trump has said Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile must either be transferred to the United States or eliminated under international supervision as part of any agreement.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump outlined his conditions for handling Iran’s nuclear material.
“The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event,” he wrote.
Trump did not clarify whether his proposal applies only to Iran’s estimated 440kg of highly enriched uranium or to its entire stockpile, although US officials have suggested the full inventory would need to be removed.
Iranian officials have said they will not engage on the nuclear file until a proposed 60-day ceasefire linked to the talks takes effect.
