A large portion of US defensive and offensive capabilities were depleted during the war with Iran, particularly in the defence of Israel, according to The Washington Post.
“The US military has depleted much of its inventory of advanced missile-defence interceptors after expending far more high-end munitions defending Israel amid hostilities with Iran than Israeli forces used themselves,” Defence Department assessments described to The Washington Post.
The newspaper, citing Pentagon assessments and US officials, reported that the US military fired more than 200 THAAD missile interceptors during the conflict to defend Israel. This is roughly half of the Pentagon’s total stock of the system.
The Washington Post also quoted three US officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security matters, as saying, “the imbalance underscores the extent to which Washington has shouldered the burden of countering Iranian ballistic missile strikes during Operation Epic Fury,” adding that this “raises questions about US military readiness and security commitments around the world.”
