If somebody mentioned you could receive payment to relocate to a picturesque Swiss village, enveloped by stunning landscapes, it sounds virtually impossible to turn down – so what’s holding you back?
Leaving the UK features on many people’s wish lists, and it appears some nations are more than willing to welcome newcomers, to such an extent that they’re literally offering payment.
With remote working gaining traction, the chance to relocate overseas is becoming increasingly accessible, and nations are responding with an offer that’s difficult to refuse.
Switzerland boasts a global reputation for its exceptional quality of life, and nestled within is one peaceful village welcoming Brits for over £22,000. The scheme was established to address their dwindling population and has attracted people from overseas since 2017.
Albinen is the charming village located in the canton of Valais, which recently launched an incentive programme to tackle a falling population.
It happens to be a stunning location which would make it challenging for travellers to decline, with national parks right on its doorstep and breathtaking outdoor areas.
The village
Albinen perches on a steep hillside above the Rhône Valley, providing the ideal setting for an abundance of panoramic views and a tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, its position ensures plenty of sunshine, 300 days of it.
Right on its doorstep lies the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, a sweeping expanse of dense forests, floodplains and wine-growing villages. It is quite simply a haven for walkers, boasting countless trails to explore and lose yourself in the great outdoors.
Dotted throughout the village are a wealth of herbs and medicinal plants, something the area has long been celebrated for, which are believed to possess remarkable healing properties.
Guided tours are available for visitors eager to discover more about the local plant culture, and many are astonished to learn that the vast majority are edible and widely used by residents in their daily lives.
Many tourists are drawn to the area to unwind in the nearby thermal spas of Leukerbad, a cornerstone of life in this corner of Switzerland. Others pass through en route to marvel at the iconic Matterhorn, the striking pyramidal peak that dominates the Swiss mountain range.
The programme
The scheme designed to attract newcomers to the Swiss village offers adults CHF 25,000, roughly equivalent to approximately £22,000 each. On top of this, CHF 10,000, around £8,800, is provided per child.
For a family comprising two adults and one child, this amounts to a combined total of roughly £52,800. However, there are naturally a number of conditions attached that may give pause to those not fully committed to making such a significant life change.
These include:
- All applicants must be under 45 (not including any children).
- They must pledge to live in Albinen for a minimum of 10 years.
- They must acquire a property valued at a minimum of CHF 200,000.
- If you choose to leave before those 10 years are up, you must reimburse the funds.
With such an enticing proposition up for grabs, it could well be the perfect moment to take the plunge and embrace a tranquil existence in the Swiss Mountains — though it’s certainly not a choice to be taken lightly.
