Barcelona are looking to pounce on Tottenham captain Cristian Romero’s availability this summer, but they will need some help from West Ham and Everton.
Planning for the upcoming summer transfer window is in full swing at the Camp Nou, with sporting director Deco already flying across Europe to talk to potential new acquisitions. He was in England over the weekend to hold talks with Chelsea forward Joao Pedro.
The Brazil international has become Barcelona’s top target to replace the departing Roberto Lewandowski because the Catalans have resigned themselves to the fact that Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez is unattainable.
However, the No.9 position isn’t the Blaugrana’s only priority this summer. They are also planning to bring in a new centre-back and recently discussed a move with Inter star Alessandro Bastoni.
Barcelona initially looked to have strong chances of signing the Azzurri star, but reports in Spain have now confirmed what was already rumoured in Italy in recent days: the deal for Bastoni appears to be off.
Barca pivot from Bastoni to Romero
Sport states that Barcelona have pulled out of the race to sign the 27-year-old. He is too expensive, and head coach Hansi Flick is not entirely convinced that he is the right fit for his system.
Instead, Barcelona are now targeting Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, who was previously rumoured to be a target for Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. One thing is already clear: he will leave Spurs this summer.
The Spanish outlet corroborates this information, writing that Barcelona have already been informed of the player’s desire to join a new club after this disastrous Tottenham season. As is always the case with the LaLiga champions, though, Romero’s price is a stumbling block.
Tottenham are said to be asking for a fee in the region of €60 million. Barcelona believe that this figure can be pushed down a bit, even if Spurs manage to stay in the Premier League. Ideally, though, they want the North London club to get relegated.
Spurs’ negotiating position will be significantly weaker if they are in the Championship, and Barcelona are convinced that they could then secure a reasonable deal for Romero.
Tottenham squandered the chance to secure their survival on Tuesday by yet again succumbing to defeat at Stamford Bridge, where they have a disastrous record. The relegation battle will therefore go down to the final day.
Spurs still have it all in their own hands. Because of their significantly better goal difference, a draw with Everton is likely going to be enough to send West Ham down. However, if they lose and the Hammers win against Leeds, Spurs will end up in the second tier.
It is claimed that Romero is keen on a move to Barcelona, so the Catalans will evidently be rooting for Everton and West Ham this Sunday.
