The Canadian government is facing growing calls to pursue accountability after a Canadian citizen was killed in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon last month.
Hassan Haidar, a 38-year-old father of five from Windsor, Ontario, was killed in an Israeli drone strike on the village of Qana near Tyre on 10 April.
Al Jazeera questioned Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand over Ottawa’s decision to ask Israel to investigate the killing.
“This strikes me as odd only because if a Canadian citizen died in Ukraine, would you be asking Moscow to investigate?” Al Jazeera’s Scott McLean asked Anand.
She replied, “We’re requesting all of the information that might be available, leading to the death of a Canadian citizen.”
Anand added that the government “will ensure that no stone is left unturned”.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims criticised Ottawa’s approach, saying “we cannot accept the suspect investigating their own crimes”.
