Venezuelan students in Caracas protest death of late political prisoner’s mother

Central University of Venezuela students were marching on Monday in Caracas to protest a grieving mother’s death after months of demanding that the government disclose her son’s whereabouts.

Carmen Teresa Navas died on Sunday, just about 10 days after learning that her son Víctor Quero Navas had died as a political prisoner. She was 82. Venezuelan journalist Maryorin Méndez was the first to report her death.

Quero Navas, a businessman, vanished on Jan. 3, 2025. In April, as Navas demanded answers, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights issued a resolution granting “precautionary protection measures” to both her and her son.

On May 7, the Venezuelan government released a statement reporting that on July 15, 2025, Quero Navas was transferred to the Dr. Carlos Arvelo Military Hospital, where he died of acute respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary thromboembolism.

After the announcement, the United Nations released a statement expressing “grave concern” over the “enforced disappearance” of Quero Navas and his “subsequent death in custody” and urged Venezuelan officials “to initiate a prompt, effective and independent investigation.”
