Scott McTominay has helped net Manchester United a significant transfer fee this summer after scoring the goal that secured Champions League football for Napoli next season.
McTominay joined United’s academy as a six-year-old and made more than 250 appearances for the club before joining Napoli in 2024 for €30.5 million.
The 29-year-old has become a star during his time in Italy and was named the league’s MVP during his debut season after leading Napoli to the Serie A title.
And the Scottish international has continued his form this season with ten goals, the latest of which came in Napoli’s 3-0 win at Pisa on Sunday that Antonio Conte’s side will finish no lower than fourth in Serie A.
Crucially, it meant that Rasmus Hojlund’s loan from United has now become a permanent move after securing Champions League football, with the Red Devils set to net €44m from the sale.
Napoli had already paid €6m to take Hojlund on loan and the 23-year-old – who assisted McTominay’s opener and scored his side’s third goal – will remain with the club for the foreseeable future.

Hojlund spent two years at United after an €80m move from Atalanta in 2023 but the Danish international struggled to adapt to Premier League football and only scored four goals last season.
With United signing Benjamin Sesko during the summer, Hojlund was told he had no future with the club and ended up returning to Italy with Napoli, where he has become an important figure.
Only McTominay has played in more minutes than Hojlund for Napoli this season and the striker is the club’s top scorer with 11 goals in Serie A.
Hojlund is understood to have penned a contract until 2030 with Napoli which contains an €85m release clause that is valid from next summer.
The deal gives United a welcome boost to their transfer plans, particularly with the club still negotiating with Barcelona to try and agree a similar deal to turn Marcus Rashford’s loan into a permanent deal.
United are desperate to splash the cash this summer to support Michael Carrick after he agreed to become their permanent coach and the sales of Hojlund and potentially Rashford would be a much-needed windfall for their transfer ambitions.
