Manchester United have emerged as frontrunners to sign Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the West Ham star said to be ‘extremely keen’ on a move after contact was made over a deal.
Fernandes has attracted strong interest after an impressive debut campaign for the Hammers in which he has been nominated for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award.
Reports surfaced this week of Paris Saint-Germain entering the race to sign Fernandes, while The Times have revealed that Arsenal are also interested in a potential transfer for the 21-year-old.
However, according to TEAMtalk, United may prove the strongest suitors for Fernandes after speaking to the player’s representatives, with both sides ‘very keen’ on each other.
In particular, the West Ham midfielder is understood to be excited at a potential link-up with his namesake Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford, whom he considers an idol, having also bigged up Cristiano Ronaldo’s stint in Manchester this week.
Bruno Fernandes is also said to have talked up his international teammate and encouraged United to sign a player whom the club believe could eventually be his successor.
West Ham do not want to sell Fernandes and would reportedly demand a fee in excess of €90 million if they avoid the drop, however they would be forced into a sale for a significantly lower fee if they do get relegated into the Championship.
Fernandes on course for big-money summer move as Man Utd take aim
Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton for €44m and the Portuguese international has proven a rare gem in a difficult season, drawing plaudits for being equally adept defensively and with the ball at his feet in midfield.
There is no relegation release clause in Fernandes’ contract, while Southampton are also believed to retain a 15% sell-on for a player who has three goals and three assists in the Premier League this season.
With United keen to sign at least two midfielders this summer, Fernandes could become a top target for the Red Devils, who are believed to see Fernandes as both a partner and a successor to Bruno.
PSG have also allegedly made contact with Fernandes’ camp, while Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest, suggesting that Fernandes will be in line for a major transfer this summer.
