West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has dropped a fresh hint that he could be on his way to Manchester United in the summer, citing Cristiano Ronaldo as the Premier League legend he’d most like to team up with.
Fernandes has been increasingly linked with a move to Man Utd in the transfer window, with the Portugal international highlighted as a potential replacement for Casemiro in the heart of the Old Trafford side’s midfield.
The Irons star gave further ammunition to those who believe he’s ready for a step up to an elite Premier League side thanks to a virtuoso display in the 1-0 loss against Arsenal at the weekend.
Mateus Fernandes’ Cristiano Ronaldo praise
While the player has not commented on the transfer speculation linking him with a summer move directly as West Ham battle against the drop, he has dropped the biggest hint yet that he sees the move to United as an attractive one.
He was asked on the Premier League’s YouTube channel which football era he would travel back to and play in.
“Cristiano in Manchester,” he replied. “United were unbelievable at that time and Cristiano was amazing.”
Ronaldo at Man Utd
Ronaldo spent two spells at Man Utd, with the first being the more successful on both a personal and team basis.
After being signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2003, he won three Premier League titles with the Old Trafford outfit as well as the 2007/08 Champions League and the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup.
On a personal basis, he claimed the first of his five Ballons d’Or and was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008.
This set up a move to Real Madrid, where his legend grew.
