After an NBC Sports Boston host criticized the Boston Red Sox for their handling of a young phenom’s injury, a star teammate returned fire to the reporter before deleting his Instagram account.
NBC Sports Boston host Michael Holly publicly called out the Red Sox for ‘[lying] about injuries’ – especially to young star Roman Anthony.
‘Why are you playing games with us? This is an unnecessary lie,’ Holly said on a broadcast. ‘We know you’re lying. Stop it.’
Holley also directed criticism at interim manager Chad Tracy for trying to suggest that Anthony is headed for the injured list.
‘I’m rooting for Roman Anthony,’ Holley continued, ‘I was one of those people who said he’s ready to take the next step. Last year, in his limited amount of time with the Red Sox, I said he was their best player. I said this. But… this has to be one of the biggest, so far, this has to be one of the biggest flops that we’ve seen.’
After Holley made his comments, Duran jumped on his Instagram story to defend his teammate.

Duran then posted Holley’s comments to his IG Story, called him a clown, and then deleted his entire account after making the remarks. It is not clear why Duran’s account was deleted.
‘They let people like this on nbc sports,’ Duran posted over a clip of Holley’s remarks, while also choosing to add a clown emoji and a laughing-crying emoji.
But after a while, rather than deleting the post, Duran appeared to delete his entire Instagram account. An attempt to click on the link that accesses his profile leads to a ‘page isn’t available’ message.
It’s unclear what led to Duran deleting his account, but it has not returned as of the time of publishing.
While Anthony has struggled this season – batting .229 and only managing one home run and five RBI – Duran has been performing worse.
The 29-year-old outfielder is slashing .194/.253/.324 for the Red Sox across 139 plate appearances.
Boston is in the midst of a 17-23 slump in a season where they already fired manager Alex Cora. The Red Sox will face of against the Philadelphia Phillies, who also fired their manager, in a three-game series this week.
