Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon has taken a major step to completing a move to Bayern Munich, but there remains a possibility that he could sign for one of the top Premier League clubs still courting him.
Gordon has emerged as a likely candidate to leave St James’ Park this summer, with the England winger twice left on the bench by manager Eddie Howe in recent matches.
FootballTransfers exclusively broke the news that Arsenal are considering a bid for the 25-year-old, while interest from Liverpool and Chelsea has also emerged.
Bayern Munich, though, have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals in this transfer battle by agreeing personal terms with Gordon, TalkSport reports.
A significant window of opportunity remains for the Premier League clubs, however, as there remains a sizeable gap in valuation between Newcastle’s asking price and what the Bundesliga side are willing to offer.
Anthony Gordon: The state of play
Gordon has increasingly looked likely to leave Newcastle this summer following bombshell reports in The Telegraph that feels he has “outgrown” the club.
Arsenal continue to track the former Everton man closely, aiming to make him part of an English core to Mikel Arteta’s side.
Bayern Munich, though, have agreed personal terms with the player but much work needs to be done on the fee.
Newcastle want €86.5 million (£75m) for Gordon. They are said to be “optimistic” that this figure will be met given the volume of interest in the player. It is unclear what valuation that Bayern have put on the player.
FootballTransfers’ algorithm gives Gordon an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €57m.
Howe speaks out on transfer rumours
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has already suggested that Gordon will be on the move with comments made following the weekend’s clash with Nottingham Forest.
“The team has performed well in Anthony’s absence. Obviously, we have gone with a bit more solidity with Joelinton playing wide and one winger the other side just to try and strengthen us defensively, because we weren’t happy with how we were defending. Since January, really, we have been disappointed – so a change of structure really,” he told the media.
“Ant has come back to fitness. He’s training well but, also, I’m looking at the future as well…”
He subsequently clarified these remarks, claiming that Gordon remains committed to the club.
“He wouldn’t be in the squad if that wasn’t the case. I judge that, as I said many times, not on communications elsewhere, I do that with my relationship with the player and how I see them train,” Howe said.
Is Gordon making the right decision?
Gordon wants to move to Bayern having been impressed with the impact that Michael Olise has made in Germany following his move to the Bundesliga. But could he have the same impact?
SciSports’ Career Advice tool, which judges moves based on a variety of metrics, including potential development, game time, playing style and formation, suggests that Gordon would be better off staying in the Premier League.
Bayern Munich receive a Club Fit score of 66, with their playing style a particular concern.
By contrast, Liverpool score 75 and Arsenal hit 71.
Inter Milan are seen as Gordon’s best destination with a score of 78, though the Serie A champions are not thought to be in the race for the Newcastle star.
