The Israeli parliament on Monday night approved a law establishing a special military court for members of Hamas’ elite unit, after passing its second and third readings.
In mid-January, the Knesset approved the bill in its first reading. It was introduced by Constitution Committee chairman Simcha Rothman of the Religious Zionism party and opposition lawmaker Yulia Malinovsky of Yisrael Beytenu party.
Israel’s public broadcaster said the bill passed its second and third readings, officially becoming law.
The privately owned newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the law was approved by 93 votes, with no opposition or abstentions.
The newspaper said: “the law lays the legal foundation for unprecedented trials – the largest and most significant held in Israel since the Eichmann trial.”
Israel captured Nazi official Adolf Eichmann in Argentina in 1961 before executing him in 1962.
