The agent of Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson has responded to suggestions that his client could be on the move this summer, with a blockbuster transfer to Rangers recently mooted.
The Scotland international has been a sensational servant to the Serie A side since joining from Aberdeen in 2022, but his time at the club could be coming to an end after this season.
Ferguson has made 42 appearances across all competitions this season, but he has not cracked the 3,000-minute mark. Particularly in Serie A, the midfielder has often had to make do with a place on the substitutes’ bench.
This shouldn’t be entirely surprising, given that he had suffered an ACL injury in early 2024 and only returned to action towards the end of last season. Bologna have been wary of overplaying him.
The 26-year-old has enjoyed some good times with the Italian club, most notably qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Coppa Italia. This season looked promising again, but some disappointing results have seen the club slip out of European contention.
Ferguson could leave Bologna
Because of this, Ferguson’s future is uncertain. He has shown that he is capable of playing for an elite team and will have ambitions of regularly playing in Europe after getting a taste of Champions League and Europa League football with Bologna.
There has been growing transfer speculation, and it has even been suggested that Rangers could be an option for the Scot. Ferguson, of course, comes from a family of former Gers stars, and he had hoped to join the Ibrox club from Aberdeen in 2022.
That move didn’t materialise, and it is likely to be the same story again this summer. Financially, Ferguson appears to be out of reach of the Glasgow giants, as he currently boasts an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €20 million.
A move to the Premiership would also be a step backwards for Ferguson at this stage of his career, as his agent Bill McMurdo has now made clear. Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, he has revealed that the Bologna captain will only join a club in a top-five league this summer.
“Lewis has two years left on his contract,” McMurdo explained. “We’ll meet with the club soon to assess whether they’d like to offer him a contract extension or let it expire.”
“Lewis is more than ready to play for one of the so-called big Italian clubs if they show interest in him and Bologna is willing to let him leave. He wants to play at the highest level possible and continue to develop his career.
“He would consider offers from any of the top five footballing countries, with Italy and England being his first choices. Lewis is more than happy to stay at Bologna, but he’s equally ready to take on any new challenge to advance his career.
“Any move, however, should be beneficial for all parties.”
