Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is holding talks with Juventus over a transfer away from the Anfield giants, who have already made their minds up over the replacement for the Brazil international.
Alisson has a year left on his contract with the Reds, and transfer insider Ben Jacobs says that he is seriously considering his future.
The situation of the 33-year-old has been compared to that of Andy Robertson in January, when Tottenham were targeting him. He is not actively pushing to leave the club, yet is open to exploring other options.
Reports from Italy have previously indicated that Alisson has agreed a three-year contract with Juventus worth a total of €15 million, but a transfer agreement with Liverpool had not been reached.
Jacobs is not so definitive on the goalkeeper having reached personal terms with the Serie A giants – but he is firm over his stance that Giorgi Mamardashvili will be given the opportunity to secure his role as Liverpool’s No.1 going forward.
Mamardashvili in line to replace Alisson
“Juventus are currently in talks with Alisson, and the Brazilian keeper is open to joining,” the transfer insider explains on X.
“However, Alisson is expected to approach any potential exit in the same manner as Andy Robertson in January. He has an excellent relationship with #LFC and is not agitating to leave unless it suits all parties.
“Alisson is heading into the final year of his Liverpool contract.
“Should Alisson leave, Giorgi Mamardashvili will be given the chance as No.1 next season.
“Liverpool have done homework on keepers as part of due diligence, but there is confidence in the existing group.
“Mamardashvili is still viewed as Liverpool’s long-term No.1.”
Is Mamardashvili the answer for Liverpool?
The 25-year-old was signed from Valencia in 2024 for this purpose. Liverpool invested €30m in him following strong displays in La Liga that convinced them that he is Alisson’s heir. The deal was struck so he could play 2024/25 in Spain before moving to Merseyside last summer.
Nevertheless, this is a big vote of confidence in Mamardashvili, who has made 19 appearances for Liverpool this season but has kept only three clean sheets behind a defence that has not looked particularly robust.
SciSports has cast some doubt over his suitability to take the gloves at Anfield on a permanent basis. It’s data-driven analysis of the player ranks him only 14th among all goalkeepers in the Premier League, although Manchester City’s James Trafford is the only second-choice who is rated ahead of him.
This would suggest that the Reds should be exploring the transfer market for a new shot-stopper this summer if Alisson does indeed depart. Previous reports had indicated that they had drawn up a five-man shortlist of options for the summer, one of which was Mamardashvili, that included the likes of PSG’s Lucas Chevalier and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
But it appears that if Alisson leaves Liverpool in the summer, they are ready to give the Georgia international his chance on a permanent basis.
