Steve Kerr makes decision on Golden State Warriors future after three weeks of contact talks

The Golden State Warriors have reached an agreement with head coach Steve Kerr to extend his contract for another two years.

The money involved in the deal is not immediately clear but according to ESPN’s NBA Insider Shams Charania, the terms will see Kerr remain as the best-paid coach in the league. He is currently paid in the region of $17.5million a season in California.

Furthermore, it means that Kerr will now lead the team into a 13th season at the helm.

The two parties had been deep in talks over what the future holds after the Warriors finished 10th in the Western Conference in 2026. 

Kerr, 60, has won four NBA Championships in his time with the team and is adored by teh team’s fanbase.

Earlier in the week, it was reported by respceted NBA reporter Marc Stein that ESPN executives were trying to convince Kerr to leave his job for a broadcasting role.

Kerr, 60, remains for what may also the be the final stretch of the great Steph Curry’s career

There had been scrutiny over Kerr’s future at the start of the season, given he went into the campaign with only 12 months left to go.

But the man himself was dismissive of the added attention, telling reporters back in September: ‘I’m very comfortable going into the season with a year left.

‘I’m so aligned with Mike (Dunleavy, the team’s General Manager) and Joe (Lacob, the owner). We talked about this. There’s no reason for discussion or concern. 

‘This is kind of a point in our relationship where let’s just see how it is at the end of the year. I love my job. I love what I’m doing every day. I can’t wait to get to the building. Hopefully I’m here for another few years.’

Now, after extensive talks with those people he mentioned at the very top of the Warriors organizaton, Kerr can focus on rebuilding this team once again.

Those negotiations weren’t without moments where some felt Kerr would leave, though.

He hinted he thought that his time could be up when the Warriors lost their play-in to the Phoenix Suns in April.

‘I don’t know what’s going to happen,’ he said. ‘I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas.’

His extension also sees Steph Curry remain under the guidance of the coach he admires so much for what could also be the final stretch of his career at age 38.
