A woman with suspected hantavirus has been admitted to a hospital in Spain.
The 32-year-old shared a flight with one of the passengers on board MV Hondius who subsequently died.
She is said to be in Sant Joan General Hospital in Alicante in Spain’s Costa Blanca region.
Javier Padilla, the Spanish government’s Secretary of State for Health, said: “The person has reported compatible symptoms, mainly symptoms related to coughing while at their family home in Alicante.
“We immediately contacted the General Directorate of Public Health of Spain and, in coordination with the Regional Ministry of Health, proceeded with their preventive and safe transfer to a hospital.”
Regional health officials said this afternoon in a statement: “The Regional Ministry of Health is monitoring the condition of a 32-year-old woman, resident in Alicante, who travelled on the same plane from which the woman who later died after leaving the MV Hondius cruise ship was evacuated because she was already showing symptoms.
“The woman, who is presenting mild respiratory symptoms, will be transferred, as a preventive measure and following the protocol approved today by the Ministry of Health, to a negative-pressure room in a hospital in the province of Alicante, where samples will be taken and sent to the National Center for Microbiology.
“Results are expected to be available within 24 to 48 hours.
“The General Directorate of Public Health contacted the woman today after receiving an alert through the European Alert System and in coordination with the Ministry of Health.
“The Regional Ministry of Health will report on the progress of the patient’s monitoring in line with the relevance to public interest regarding a public health issue that has gained international attention.”
