Head of Hamas abroad Khaled Meshaal said the Gaza Strip “has given the greatest of its sons and people”, stressing that the enclave “will remain at the forefront despite all the pain, siege and sacrifices”.
His remarks came during a memorial speech for the martyr Azzam al-Hayya, the son of Hamas leader in Gaza Dr Khalil al-Hayya, who was killed in an Israeli air strike targeting him in Gaza City.
Meshaal said: “This is a moment of martyrdom and martyrs, and congratulations to our dear brother, leader Dr Abu Osama, on the martyrdom of his fourth son.” He added that “only people of faith and certainty can make such great sacrifices”.
He said losing children “is not easy”, while praising the “patience and steadfastness” shown by al-Hayya and his wife.
Meshaal added that Gaza had “presented this great legend which will, God willing, lead Israel and the enemies of the nation toward collapse and defeat, no matter how long it takes.”
He also called on the nation to “carry its historical, moral and humanitarian responsibilities” towards Palestinians, stressing the need to continue supporting Gaza and Palestine “until victory and relief are achieved”.
