Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has admitted that the upcoming summer transfer window is “difficult to predict” amid substantial interest in England international Anthony Gordon.
The 25-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s standout players since his arrival from Everton in 2023 and his form over the past few years has attracted the attention of multiple elite European clubs.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been linked with Gordon in recent months, while FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that Arsenal are set to lodge a formal bid for his services this summer after identifying as a top target for the left wing position..
Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are also keeping close tabs on his situation at St James’ Park and rumours in the German media have suggested that he is their preferred forward signing for the summer window as they look to bolster the attacking options at Vincent Kompany’s disposal.
Luis Diaz has enjoyed an excellent debut campaign at the Allianz Arena, however the Bavarian outfit are keen to improve their squad depth this summer, especially as they have already confirmed they will not be triggering the buy option clause included in Nicolas Jackson’s loan deal.
Sky Sports have now revealed that Bayern have opened talks with Newcastle over a possible summer move for Gordon, with the Magpies reportedly willing to accept a sale for the right price as they are aware of the 25-year-old’s desire to explore his options.
Official contact has been made and with rumours indicating that Gordon is keen to join Bayern, Arsenal must act swiftly if they want to win the race for his signature.
However, when asked if he could provide any more information about Bayern’s interest in the England attacker ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, Howe remained tight-lipped.
“No, none. That’s not something I’m involved in,” he replied.
“It is difficult for me to comment too much on individual players and timescales as that is going into an area that isn’t really my forte. I will leave that to other people. All I am doing is try and finish the season in a strong way and make sure players are committed to the here and now,” Howe continued.
“There is no point looking to the future. The summer transfer window is difficult to predict and difficult to see what is going to happen on any level at this moment in time. We have three games to play and our full focus is on that.”
Verdict: How much will Anthony Gordon cost?
Gordon’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €57.1 million, but ex-Newcastle star Chris Waddle believes his former club should demand a far higher fee.
“If Alexander Isak went for £125m (€145m), you’ve got to be looking at £100m (€115m) for Anthony Gordon,” Waddle told FootballTransfers.
“He’s young, he’s only going to get better, you would think, so there’s no reason why Newcastle can’t ask for £100m+ in modern day football.
“He scores goals, he creates chances and if I were Newcastle, he’s got four years left on his contract, I’d say, ‘he’s not for sale.’
“If he wants to leave, I’d say, ‘put a transfer request in.’ And then say, ‘you’re not leaving unless it’s over £100m’.”
