The Israeli newspaper Maariv reported that concern is increasing within Israel over efforts by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to rebuild the Syrian military.
According to the report, the Syrian leadership is working to rehabilitate the air force and develop heavy weapons capabilities, including armoured vehicles, artillery systems and missiles.
Maariv said Israeli officials believe the consolidation of the new Syrian government is advancing more rapidly than expected.
The report added that Israeli security officials view the developments with concern partly because of support provided by Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the Syrian authorities.
Israeli military and defence officials quoted by the newspaper described the new Syrian government as a potential long-term threat, claiming it is strengthening its military capabilities with Turkish backing.
One military source cited in the report said Israel does not trust the Syrian leadership and considers the situation highly sensitive, while another said Syria is attempting to rebuild air defence systems and restore parts of its helicopter fleet.
The report also said Israeli officials fear possible regional spillover into Lebanon, particularly if tensions involving Hezbollah intensify.
According to Maariv, Israeli military intelligence is closely monitoring developments, while forces along the Syrian border are reinforcing defensive positions.
A military source said Israeli forces have expanded fortifications and security measures stretching from Mount Hermon along the eastern frontier, adding that the army is preparing for multiple scenarios.
