Manchester United’s interest in West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has been confirmed, and it is no surprise that he is emerging as a key target.

The Portugal international has been the shining light in back-to-back relegation struggles. Fernandes joined West Ham after being unable to keep Southampton in the Premier League, but he is again facing demotion to the Championship.

The Hammers’ damaging loss to Brentford and Tottenham’s subsequent victory over Aston Villa have turned the relegation battle on its head. West Ham have gone from seemingly having all the momentum to now chasing Spurs again.

While another relegation would be a stain on Fernandes’ CV, he can hardly be blamed for the East London club’s predicament. He has again managed to impress despite the circumstances, just as he did at Southampton.

If West Ham indeed end up dropping down to the Championship, keeping Fernandes will likely prove impossible. In fact, even if they manage to stay up, he will surely be keen to take the next step in his career.

Man Utd want Fernandes

The Hammers appear to be fighting a losing battle. The Telegraph has now confirmed that the 21-year-old is a target for Man Utd, who are looking to sign several midfielders this summer.

He was reportedly already on the Red Devils’ radar last summer, but they thought it was too early for him to make the move. Now, after another solid season, Man Utd could act on their interest, but he also has suitors elsewhere.

West Ham are unlikely to be willing to part with Fernandes for less than the €44 million they paid for him last summer. This could throw up a potential issue, as his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) only stands at €23.9m currently.

However, it is easy to see why Man Utd would want to sign him, regardless of his cost. In addition to his impressive performances, he is believed to be a strong fit for the Old Trafford club.

As per data analytics firm SciSports, Man Utd are one of the best-suited clubs for the Portugal international. SciSports takes several factors, such as game time, development prospects and stylistic fit, into account when calculating a Club Fit score.

For Man Utd, that score sits at an impressive 77 out of 100. Only Juventus and Napoli have higher scores, with both clocking in at 80. It is believed that Fernandes would get plenty of game time, and this is before Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte have even left the club.

One concern would be Fernandes’ playing style. Out of his top-five best-suited clubs, Man Utd are thought to be the weakest stylistic fit for the Portugal international. This has to be taken with a grain of salt, though, given the club’s managerial situation.

Even if interim boss Michael Carrick gets the job permanently, Man Utd’s approach may look slightly different next term, especially if they end up signing Fernandes and are able to integrate him into the team in pre-season.

Overall, then, he looks to be an ideal fit for Man Utd. Don’t be surprised if this transfer starts picking up steam the closer we get to the summer window.
