Former Super Eagles midfielder Nosa Igiebor has criticized the quality of friendly matches arranged for Nigeria, insisting the team should be facing stronger opposition.
Reacting to the fixtures lined up, Igiebor expressed disappointment that the Super Eagles are not testing themselves against top-tier teams, especially after missing out on the World Cup.
“We need bigger games,” he said.
According to him, playing against teams like Jordan national football team, Zimbabwe national football team, India national football team, and Jamaica national football team does little to improve the team’s competitiveness.
“These games don’t help us,” he implied.
Igiebor argued that facing elite nations would better prepare the team for future tournaments and expose areas that need improvement.
“We must challenge ourselves,” he noted.
For him, the purpose of friendlies should be to simulate high-pressure conditions and test the squad against world-class opposition.
“That’s how you grow,” he added.
The former midfielder stressed that Nigeria must aim higher in its preparation strategy if it hopes to return to the top level of international football.
“We can do better,” he said.
His comments come amid ongoing debates about the direction of the national team following recent setbacks.
As the Super Eagles plan for the future, the quality of opposition will remain a key factor.
