South African youngster Ruan Uys announced himself on the continental stage with a standout performance at the African Armwrestling Championship Accra 2026, clinching gold in the Junior Boys +90kg (left hand) category.
Uys defeated Ghana’s Jeremy Baba-Tutu in the final to secure top spot, showcasing strength, composure, and tactical awareness beyond his years. Competing in only his first full season in the sport, the 98kg athlete has quickly risen through the ranks since taking up armwrestling in August 2024.

Speaking with Sports247Naija after his victory, Uys reflected on his journey and growing passion for the sport, despite also being active in rugby in his hometown.
“Rugby is more deadly than armwrestling, but in armwrestling you need tactics and endurance to succeed,” he explained, noting that he now prefers the technical demands of armwrestling.
Although his youth category does not count toward qualification for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Uys remained upbeat about his achievement and future ambitions.
“I feel good with the victory. It’s all about hard work, and I look forward to more success,” he added.
South Africa’s strong showing was further highlighted by Sebastian Palmer, who claimed gold in the Junior Boys 80kg (left hand) division after defeating Ghana’s Stephen Sarpong in the final.
The performances underline the growing strength of youth armwrestling across Africa, with emerging talents like Uys and Palmer signaling a promising future for the sport on the continent.
