China’s envoy to the United Nations, Fu Cong, said there is no genuine ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, describing the situation instead as a “lesser fire”.
Speaking at UN headquarters in New York, he said it is “incumbent on Israel to stop this bombardment of Lebanon”.
The remarks came as China assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for May.
According to the National News Agency and Lebanese officials, dozens of people have been killed in recent days, with the total death toll since renewed fighting on 2 March reaching into the thousands.
