Jimmy Kimmel has refused to apologise for saying Melania Trump had “a glow like an expectant widow”.
The late-night host – who made the joke three days before the White House correspondents’ dinner shooting – was accused by President Donald Trump and the first lady of inciting violence. On Monday, Melania accused Kimmel of “hateful and violent rhetoric” and “atrocious behaviour”, and said it was “time for ABC to take a stand” against the comedian.
During his Monday night monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Kimmel pointed out that he had made the joke on Thursday and said it was not a call to violence.
“Obviously, it was a joke about their age difference and the look of joy we see on her face every time they’re together,” he said. “It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am. It was not – by any stretch of the definition – a call to assassination. And they know that. I’ve been very vocal for many years, speaking out against gun violence, in particular.”
Kimmel also defended his right to free speech, saying: “I also should point out Donald Trump is allowed to say whatever he wants to say, as are you and as am I and as are all of us, because under the First Amendment we have as Americans the right to free speech.”
