Chelsea have joined the race to sign Arsenal target Anthony Gordon, who is widely expected to leave Newcastle United during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The England international still has four years remaining on his current contract at St James’ Park, but it’s believed that he is set to explore his options this summer due to the club’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Newcastle are languishing down in 14th place in the Premier League table, having lost four consecutive English top flight matches, and Eddie Howe’s position as head coach appears to be in serious danger amid their current plight.

The likes of Valentino Livramento, Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Nick Woltemade have all been linked with 2026 exits, while it has been reported that Newcastle will also listen to offers for Yoane Wissa, who has endured a difficult first campaign at the club following his arrival from Brentford last summer.

Meanwhile, Gordon is another big-name player who could be set to depart, with Newcastle potentially willing to sanction a sale for the right price in order to raise funds for a fairly sizable squad overhaul.

The Athletic report that a fee of €92 million (£80m) will be required to finalise a deal for Gordon this summer, although the club will not be forced into accepting a cut-price transfer due to his current contractual situation.

Anthony Gordon transfer update

As exclusively reported by FootballTransfers earlier this month, Arsenal are expected to submit a formal offer for Gordon when the summer window opens, with Mikel Arteta’s side desperate to bolster their options in attack ahead of next season.

Bayern Munich are also keeping close tabs on the 25-year-old and rumours have suggested that Michael Olise’s success at the Allianz Arena has given Gordon encouragement to complete a move to the Bundesliga giants.

However, The Athletic have now confirmed that Chelsea are in the running for his signature too.

The Blues want to sign a new forward this summer following the underwhelming debut campaigns of Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap, and they have reportedly earmarked Gordon as a top candidate for the role, having admired the Englishman since his days at Everton.

A move will not be dependent on whether Chelsea qualify for the Champions League, it’s claimed, and the west London giants are understood to have identified Gordon as a target largely due to the fact he is proven in the Premier League.

The Newcastle attacker has scored 17 goals and provided five assists in 46 games across all competitions so far this season, although only six of his strikes have come in the English top flight.
