Nigeria has stepped up its build-up to the African Armwrestling Championship scheduled for May 1–2, 2026 in Accra, Ghana, with 25 athletes set to depart Lagos for the decisive continental event.
The championship will serve as the official qualifier for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt, where a total of 84 medals—28 gold, 28 silver, and 28 bronze—will be contested in the armwrestling event.

According to the President of the Nigerian Armwrestling Federation, Samuel Jackson, the athletes selected for Ghana represent the country’s strongest competitors following the national trials in Lagos.
“Our best athletes are here to represent Nigeria. We are hoping to ensure that all our athletes will secure the necessary qualification tickets,” he said.
The Nigerian team is expected to face stiff competition from across the continent, with several countries increasing investment in the sport and raising the overall standard of performance.
The Accra championship is considered a key step in Nigeria’s ambition to make a strong impact at the African Games, where athletes will compete for podium finishes across multiple weight categories.
Officials are optimistic that the team will secure a significant number of qualification slots, positioning Nigeria as a major contender ahead of Cairo 2027.
The delegation is expected to arrive in Ghana ahead of the competition as final preparations continue.
