Marcus Rashford is doing all he can to resurrect his dream move to Barcelona and has made a fresh offer to the Catalan club as he attempts to engineer a permanent switch out of Manchester United.
Rashford joined Barcelona on loan at the start of the season, with the Catalan side having the opportunity to sign him on a permanent basis for €30 million.
Personal terms have already been agreed between the player and the club, but Barca’s tight financial situation, as well as a dip in form from the England international, means that they have performed a U-turn and have elected not to finalise the deal.
Rashford to Barcelona: The state of play
With the possibility of a permanent switch to the Blaugrana slipping away, Rashford is now ready to take action and is prepared to go back to the negotiating table with the Catalan club in order to reduce his wages further, Mundo Deportivo reports.
The salary of the 28-year-old is the major stumbling block to the deal, but Rashford is prepared to cut his payments further.
Although his €30m buy-out clause is seen as comparatively cheap, his wages are not. With Barcelona under significant financial restrictions, they have attempted to renegotiate the transfer fee with Manchester United – something the Premier League side refuses to do.
Given that Rashford has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €38.5m, the Old Trafford side are well within their rights and could likely sell the player for a higher fee should the Blaugrana not take up their option.
Rashford’s decision to renegotiate his wages to a lower level, then, is intended to ease the financial burden on the Blaugrana.
Rashford ‘confident’ in Barcelona move
Despite the noise, Rashford is “confident” that his move to Barcelona will be completed and his “immediate plans do not involve playing for Manchester United again”, Mundo Deportivo states.
He believes that he deserves his move to Camp Nou, having scored his 13th goal of the season against Getafe at the weekend. He has also generated a further 11 assists, meaning he has a goal involvement every 89 minutes.
Rashford’s attitude, which forced him out of Man Utd after a fall out with Ruben Amorim, has won praise in Spain, meanwhile.
Mundo Deportivo states: “Being in and out of the starting XI doesn’t bother him. He understands that he’s competing with a squad of eight top attackers, including midfielders and forwards, who could easily be starters.
“Those at the Ciutat Esportiva say his behaviour, attitude, and commitment are beyond question.”
Where does this leave Man Utd?
Man Utd are little more than spectators in the Rashford saga currently. It’s a deal that’s largely out of their control.
The Red Devils have made it clear that they will not accept anything less than the €30m deal they had agreed with Barcelona previously, so their stance is clear.
Rashford only becomes a concern for them if he does not ultimately agree to terms that suit Barca.
With no permanent manager appointed, the winger’s status in the squad is unclear, though Michael Carrick has shown a willingness to work with the player if he returns to Old Trafford.
“There’s decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation,” the interim boss told the media.
“But at this point in time, nothing’s been decided. It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there’s nothing to say.
“Whoever’s here, I want to work with, and help them improve.
“At the moment, it’s this squad of players. There’s obviously players on loan, and whatever happens with that later on will happen. But certainly, as a coach, and leader of a squad, we want to get the best out of everyone.”
The prevailing logic is that United will seek to move Rashford on due to his huge contract at Old Trafford, which expires in 2028. Tottenham are rumoured to be one possible destination for the England ace.
