Barcelona will have to sell some players to fund their incoming business this summer.
Despite overcoming the worst of their financial difficulties, the Catalans need to remain mindful of LaLiga’s stringent spending rules. They are the club’s biggest hindrance when it comes to signing players.
Consequently, Barcelona are expected to take a one-in, one-out approach this summer. Club chiefs are planning to bring in a new centre-back and potentially a new striker, but departures will need to be confirmed beforehand.
Below, FootballTransfers runs through five players who could leave Barcelona this summer…
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
A forgotten man at Barcelona despite being one of the club’s captains, Germany international Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has endured a devastating few years due to his rotten injury luck.
Despite returning to fitness last summer, Barcelona replaced him with Joan Garcia and informed him that he would be the third-choice goalkeeper this season. Undeterred, Ter Stegen wanted to stay and fight for his place.
Fresh fitness problems, however, halted this fight before it even started. He became available again over the winter and joined Girona on loan to get game time under his belt, but he again suffered a lengthy injury in just his second appearance.
Ter Stegen is surplus to requirements at Barcelona and will surely be offloaded this summer.
Andreas Christensen
Like Ter Stegen, Andreas Christensen has mightily struggled to stay fit in recent seasons. This hasn’t always been a problem for the club, though. While Barcelona have perhaps missed his experience defensively, his injuries have eased the club’s LaLiga registration concerns.
His future is uncertain heading into the summer. The Dane is on an expiring contract, but there have been conflicting reports on whether or not he will be handed an extension. It is possible, and perhaps even likely, that he will seek a new challenge after this season.
Marc Casado
Talented midfielder Marc Casado opted to stay at Barcelona last summer, despite fielding strong interest from various Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Wolves.
He thought he would kick on after a promising season, but this hasn’t happened. He has increasingly struggled for minutes at Barcelona and was already linked with an exit in January, when Atletico Madrid explored a deal to sign him.
Casado has reportedly decided to leave Barcelona this summer, and the club will not stand in his way. The La Masia product is likely to fetch the club a healthy profit.
Ansu Fati
A common theme here is that most of the players who are expected to leave Barcelona have struggled with injuries, and former wonderkid Ansu Fati is no different. The erstwhile heir to Lionel Messi, the winger is no longer a promising talent.
Fati has spent the season on loan at AS Monaco. His time in the Principality has been mixed. When he has been fit, he has been fairly impactful, but he has not played as much as all parties would have wished.
Nevertheless, reports now state that Monaco are willing to trigger their purchase option, despite previous claims that they would send him back to Barcelona.
Robert Lewandowski
For months, the direction of travel looked clear for Robert Lewandowski. Barcelona were scouring the market for strikers because they wanted to move on from the veteran Poland international, whose contract is up this summer.
However, in recent times, they have changed their tune. Because their top target – Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid – is likely to prove unattainable, the Catalans have opened talks with Lewandowski over an extension.
Club president Joan Laporta is said to be pushing hard for the striker to agree to reduced terms, but reports have suggested that Lewandowski was not impressed with the club’s first contract offer.
