Manchester United are still fighting for the future of Bruno Fernandes, but PSG are hoping to deal the Old Trafford side a blow in this regard.

Bruno has hinted that he is ready to stay at United beyond the summer, but the club will have to show ambition in the transfer window.

He has previously recommended that the Red Devils sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but reports from France “confirm” that Champions League winners PSG have already made “contact” with the former Southampton man over a summer switch.

PSG launch Matheus Fernandes bid

PSG already have a strong Portuguese flavour to their side, with Vitinha, Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes all regular starters, and according to FootMercato, sporting director Luis Campos sees Mateus Fernandes as another strong option for Luis Enrique’s side.

There is not yet any discussion as to a potential fee for Fernandes, who departed Saints to join the Hammers in a €44 million deal last summer.

Having thrived in a West Ham side that has spent the season battling against relegation, the 21-year-old has attracted numerous suitors, including United and Manchester City.

Bruno wants West Ham star at Man Utd

International team-mate Bruno Fernandes is one of those who has been left impressed by his compatriot, with reports earlier this month from The Sun indicating that he had told those with transfer power at Old Trafford to sign him.

Although Mateus Fernandes has previously said that Bruno is an “idol”, fending off the Champions League winners promises to be a stern challenge for a Man Utd side without a permanent manager and still clearly in a rebuilding phase.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe also eager to slash their wage bill, there will be a major question as to whether they are capable of matching any financial offer that PSG make.

If they fail to put a good bid on the table for a player that Bruno has recommended, though, it will not send a positive message to their captain.

In the very worst case scenario, the Manchester side will miss out on Mateus Fernandes and could also see his namesake leave the club.

United fighting to retain Bruno

United are on the hunt for two new midfielders this summer. Casemiro has already confirmed his departure, while Manuel Ugarte could well be sold if a suitable offer arrives and even Bruno has not fully committed to staying for another season.

It is looking probable that the 31-year-old will remain in Manchester, despite previous speculation linking him with a departure.

“Obviously, when you’re so long in a place, you kind of feel part of it. And obviously, I’m very proud of my nation and I love my country and I love to be there. But I feel at home at Manchester,” he told Men In Blazers.

“My kids feel at home here. It’s wonderful for me to be in a place where my kids can enjoy so much and feel so much at home as they do in Manchester. I felt Mancunian until I heard my kids speaking English and having the accent. And I understand that I’m not as Mancunian as they are!”

With Bruno chasing the Premier League single-season assist record, he is a player United will be doing everything in their power to retain – even taking on PSG to sign Mateus Fernandes.
