The arrival of Super Eagles’ midfielder, Frank Onyeka at Coventry City has been cited as a huge factor in the club’s successful push for promotion to the English Premier League, which was confirmed in spectacular style on Friday.

Sports247 reports that Onyeka was in action on Friday and helped his side snatch a 1-1 draw away to Blackburn Rovers that kept them well ahead of any other team in the promotion race, with only a formality last game to cement their surge.
While Ryan Alebiosu was on for the duration with Blackburn, Onyeka got a 51st minute yellow card and was replaced after copping an injury in the 62nd minute, as the encounter at Ewood Park grew in intensity.
Onyeka and his pals will only hope to see Middlesbrough beat Ipswich Town on Sunday lunchtime, which would then mean them defeating Portsmouth at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night would seal the title for Coventry on home turf.
Although many critics slammed Onyeka for opting for a team in the lower cadre English Championship at the start of this year, the star’s daring loan move from top-flight mid-stream side, Brentford has paid off.
Such it is that the former FC Ebedie of Sagamu and FC Midtjylland of Denmark midfielder, who was born in Asaba, Delta State but grew up in Lagos, has turned into a hero among Coventry’s faithful for being part of their historic revival.
Chelsea legend, Frank Lampard, who is Coventry’s coach, has been granted a load of accolades for marshalling the club’s return to England’s top-flight after 25 years, a total of 9,113 days since they were relegated.
They plummeted into the Championship after a 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa on May 5th, 2001 but, after spending 11 years there, they were relegated to League One and fell into administration in 2013.
A return to the top was a distant dream amid the drama of two groundshares with Northampton and Birmingham, a detested ownership, multiple protests and parliamentary mentions, but they braved all odds to stage a bold resurrection.
A report by BBC Sport added in part, “Sources acknowledge there was cautious optimism at the start of the season but they did not expect such success so quickly. The foundations were laid during pre-season.
“Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who joined on loan from Brighton, has made the biggest impact but the team is largely the same from last term despite the mid-season loan additions of Romain Esse and Frank Onyeka.
“Lampard has the aura of a player who has won the lot. His influence convinced players to sign for Coventry when they had other options. With Lampard’s calming influence crucial in his first summer with the group (since) November 2024.”
