Car 'ploughs into crowd' at Melbourne Comic Con as one dead and another fighting for life

One person is dead and another is fighting for their life after a car is believed to have swerved into pedestrians at a Comic Con event.

The incident occurred just after 5pm local time at the popular Supanova Comic Con and Gaming event in Melbourne, Australia.

Police said a grey Toyota mounted a kerb on Langs Road near the Melbourne Showgrounds before hitting two pedestrians, one of whom died at the scene. The second pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. ” Police have arrested a man who will be interviewed by police,” Victoria Police said.

A witness named Tom told Nine News he was leaving the festival with his wife and daughter when a silver Toyota sped past them. “I heard a screech and a guy mounted the kerb at an erratic speed, hit a couple people,” he said.

Tom claimed the car performed a U-turn before heading back down the street towards him. He said it then stalled and he managed to get hold of the driver. “I said, ‘you’re not going anywhere mate’,” Tom explained.

Tom said his wife, a paramedic, worked on one victim for 20 minutes., before being relieved by responding emergency services. “He couldn’t move, but he was breathing,” he said.

A major crime scene has now been declared. Thousands of people are believed to have been at the event. Other witnesses described the scene as “graphic”.

“Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating a fatal collision in Ascot Vale this afternoon,” a police spokesperson said. “The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established and the investigation remains ongoing.”
