Fashanu Sues Nigerian Police, Says Arrest Ruined His Super Eagles Coaching Dream Former England striker John Fashanu is taking legal action against the Nigerian police, claiming they damaged his chances of becoming head coach of the Super Eagles. Fashanu, who once played for Aston Villa and Wimbledon, says he was in talks for the Super Eagles job before his arrest over a land dispute in Abuja. He believes the incident has destroyed his reputation in Nigeria. The 62-year-old was arrested in December 2024 along with his wife, Vivian, and his lawyer, Chinyere Chigbu. The arrest was linked to a disagreement over a 22-acre piece of land that Fashanu says he had agreed to sell for over £500,000. Fashanu says that when he and his lawyer went to sort out the matter, they were detained by the police instead. He now faces accusations of conspiracy, intimidation, trespassing, and obtaining property by false pretence—all of which he strongly denies. “My name has been dragged through the mud,” Fashanu said. “Before this arrest, I was being considered for the Super Eagles coaching job. This scandal has spoilt my image and ruined that opportunity.” Fashanu also claims he was held at the police station for several hours on December 16 and was not fully released until December 19. He says his phone was seized and his movements were restricted. Now, he has filed a ₦201 million lawsuit against 12 senior police officers, including Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police. Fashanu is asking for compensation for what he describes as wrongful arrest and a breach of his human rights. Speaking through his lawyer, Mr Chigbu, Fashanu said that his arrest was unnecessary because the land issue was a civil matter, not a criminal case. He believes the entire event was handled badly and has caused him personal and professional harm. “It was a business disagreement, but the police treated it like a crime,” said Chigbu. “They also arrested his wife and me without any good reason.” Fashanu, who is also known by the title "Ambassador Fashanu" for his services to sports and tourism, is seeking justice in the Federal High Court in Abuja. The case has been adjourned until April 10, giving the police more time to respond to his claims. Fashanu says he is determined to clear his name and restore his reputation as he continues to live in Nigeria.

Fashanu, who used to play as a striker for Aston Villa and Norwich Metropolis, believes he has the expertise and talent to steer the three-time African champions.
