Bayern Munich continued their unbeaten run in the UEFA Champions League with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.
The German champions took the lead nine minutes into the second half through 18-year-old Lennart Karl, who made up for a poor first-half performance with a brilliant finish.
Karl took advantage of a defensive mistake by Robin Le Normand, won the ball and calmly chipped it over Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Konrad Laimer doubled Bayern’s lead with a powerful shot into the roof of the net after receiving a pass from Harry Kane.
Kane, who was playing his first European match since winning the Ballon d’Or, failed to find the net and missed the chance to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring in 11 consecutive Champions League appearances.
The England captain had scored in his previous 10 appearances but could not extend the run against Atletico.
Atletico goalkeeper Oblak also made an important save to stop a deflected effort from Dayot Upamecano, which hit the crossbar.
At the other end, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had a quiet night, making just one save as Atletico struggled to create clear chances.
The victory keeps Bayern unbeaten in this season’s Champions League campaign.
Bayern will face Lille on Wednesday, November 25, while Atletico Madrid will take on Norwegian champions Viking on the same day.
