Yusuf, who won two national titles in the middleweight and super middleweight divisions, now leads the Endurance Boxing Team as a professional personal coach, guiding athletes from their early training sessions towards competitive amateur and professional boxing.
According to the coach, producing elite boxers requires years of preparation, beginning as early as age six, when children are introduced to basic physical conditioning, coordination and the fundamentals of the sport.
The development pathway continues through school and amateur competitions, where young fighters build their technical skills and gain experience before making the transition to professional boxing.
However, Yusuf believes financial difficulties remain one of the biggest obstacles facing aspiring Nigerian boxers, particularly those struggling to afford adequate nutrition while maintaining demanding training schedules.
“Financial instability regarding basic nutrition is one of our biggest blockers,” Yusuf said. “Boxers simply cannot train effectively or improve without adequate food intake—whether provided by committed sponsors or supportive families.”
The situation is further complicated by the need for many athletes to combine demanding jobs with training to meet their daily needs. Such pressures can affect their preparation and limit the time and energy they devote to developing their skills.
Yusuf also identified the shortage of dedicated promoters and managers as a major challenge for boxers who turn professional, noting that inadequate support can prevent talented fighters from securing opportunities to compete at higher levels.
Beyond financial support, the coach stressed that physical fitness, discipline and humility are essential qualities for anyone hoping to succeed in boxing.
“Fighters must come in ready to listen intently to guidance rather than act with prideful independence,” he said. “Technique and physique take you into the ring, but discipline and humility keep you alive in this sport.”
Despite the challenges, Yusuf remains committed to developing young fighters through structured training and mentorship at the National Stadium.
His work highlights the importance of sustained investment in grassroots boxing, with adequate nutrition, sponsorship and professional management needed to help Nigerian athletes turn their ambitions into successful careers.
For Yusuf, developing champions goes beyond teaching fighters how to win bouts. It also means giving young athletes the guidance and support they need to overcome difficult circumstances and pursue opportunities on the national and international stage.
