Jadon Sancho could finally be offered a route back into football after a new contender for his signature emerged, with the winger still a free agent after leaving Manchester United in the summer.
Interest has seemingly been in minimal in Sancho despite the 26-year-old once being considered a star talent and costing United €85 million just five years ago, with Dortmund ultimately opting against bringing in their former star back for a third spell during the summer.
Inconsistent performances and questions over his attitude continued to follow Sancho during his time in the Premier League, with loan spells at Chelsea and Aston Villa proving unsuccessful and still resulting in the 23-cap England international being released by United in June, even with the club having the option to extend his contract by another year.
However, reports in Spain have emerged suggesting that La Liga side Getafe are keen on bringing Sancho to the club, however his salary demand of €4m is the biggest obstacle to completing a deal.
“This summer, a LaLiga team inquired about [Sancho] and was quoted a salary of 4 or 5 million. That’s unfeasible for Getafe,” journalist Pablo Pinto told DAZN. “But it’s true that [coach] Jose Bordalás and the sporting director already like him.
“The only thing Getafe is trying to do to free up salary space is to release a long-term injured player like Juanmi from medical leave. That would free up salary space, although I don’t think enough to be able to sign Sancho.”
Jadon Sancho: Getafe eye Greenwood-esque revival of former Man Utd star’s career
Sancho’s fall from grace has been alarming and the forward may see Getafe as an appealing, top division option to revive his career, having seen ex-Man Utd teammate Mason Greenwood previously have a successful stint with the Spanish side.
Getafe qualified for the Europa Conference League last season after a seventh place finish in La Liga and they are looking to make ambitious signings, having already brought in former Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal earlier this month, while moves for Sergio Ramos and Alvaro Morata are also being explored.
However, Getafe president Angel Torres was forced to provide a guarantee that Carvajal’s salary could fit into the team’s salary cap and the same would be expected if Sancho was signed.
But with Sancho seemingly having few options to join a top flight club in a major European league, Getafe are hoping to take advantage of the player’s desperation to get back into football and broker a deal that would align with their finances.
