Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is reportedly unhappy with the delay in finalising his proposed new contract, which could increase his monthly salary from $50,000 to $75,000.
According to reports, the Franco-Malian coach had hoped to complete negotiations before Nigeria’s important 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Tanzania in November.
Nigeria will host Tanzania in Uyo on November 11, 2026, before travelling for the return leg four days later.
The Super Eagles are under pressure to improve their performance following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau. The upcoming matches are therefore important to Nigeria’s chances of progressing in the qualifying campaign.
Reports suggest that Chelle is frustrated because the proposed contract has not been officially signed, despite an alleged agreement between him and the relevant Nigerian football authorities.
The delay is reportedly linked to the resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) executive committee last month, which affected the process of completing the new deal.
However, the NFF and the National Sports Commission (NSC) are said to have recently met and agreed on an improved salary package for the former Mali national team coach.
Chelle reportedly earns $50,000 monthly under his current contract. The proposed increase to $75,000 would represent a significant improvement in his earnings.
However, the new contract has yet to be formally signed, and the reported details remain subject to official confirmation.
With Nigeria preparing for the crucial November fixtures, resolving the contract issue could help provide stability as Chelle and his team work to revive the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualifying campaign.
