The Showtime Flag Football League’s 5v5 Cup took off amid extraordinary excitement on Sunday, October 11, 2026, as ten teams boarded the runway of competition at Showtime Arena, Meadow Hall, Lekki, with dreams of flying high, only for five to suffer turbulent journeys in an opening-day spectacle that produced an astonishing 277 points.
Abia Warriors were first cleared for takeoff, overcoming Cross River Ikan Sports 21–6 to begin their Cup campaign on a winning note. Receiver Jordan Nathaniel took control of the opening flight, recording 59 receiving yards and a touchdown to claim Match MVP honours as the former champions navigated their first challenge successfully.
The atmosphere intensified when Lagos Rebels entered the airspace against Rivers Alphas. What followed was nothing short of a sporting storm, as quarterback Sulaimon Alhameen piloted the Rebels to a breathtaking 56–0 demolition. His four touchdown passes and 141 passing yards earned him a perfect 10.0 rating, leaving the Alphas grounded without a single point.
If that performance shook the runway, Ibom Raptors sent shockwaves through the entire terminal. Their attacking aircraft climbed to the day’s highest altitude, overwhelming Delta Panthers 59–22. Defender Aisha Raji Oluwatosin earned MVP recognition with seven flag pulls, while Titilayo Happiness Abanikanda and quarterback Taiwo Oluwalanu helped keep the Raptors flying at full throttle.
Reigning Showtime Bowl champions Lagos Knights then demonstrated why they remain among the competition’s most feared operators. With Kayode Mafe firmly in the cockpit, the Knights cruised past Gateway Horns 51–18. The inspirational quarterback delivered six touchdown passes and 201 passing yards, securing another perfect 10.0 performance rating.
Lagos Greenbacks completed the day’s final successful landing, defeating Delta Braves 37–7. Receiver Obiekezie Chiamaka stole the spotlight with two receiving touchdowns, earning Match MVP honours and a perfect 10.0 rating.
By the time the floodlights illuminated the final whistle, five teams had landed safely in the winners’ column, while five others were left assessing the damage from a turbulent opening journey.
With 277 points recorded across five encounters, the Showtime 5v5 Cup has announced its arrival in spectacular fashion. The first flights are complete, but the race for the championship has only just begun.
