Spain’s women’s national team claimed an impressive 2-0 victory over the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) in an international friendly at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
The reigning Women’s World Cup champions made a strong start, with Patri Guijarro opening the scoring in the third minute before Eva Navarro doubled Spain’s lead in the 14th minute. The early goals gave Spain control of the contest and ultimately proved enough to secure the win.
The United States created several opportunities to get back into the game but struggled to convert its chances. Spain goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares delivered an outstanding performance, making nine saves, including a second-half penalty stop to deny Lily Yohannes.
Despite the defeat, the USWNT showed attacking intent and registered 13 shots, with 10 on target. However, Spain’s defensive resilience and clinical finishing made the difference between the two sides.
The result gives Spain a confidence boost ahead of the teams’ second meeting on Tuesday, October 13, in Chester, Pennsylvania. The rematch will provide the United States with an opportunity to respond after falling short against the reigning world champions.
Both teams are using the two-match series to prepare for upcoming international challenges, with the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil on the horizon
