Michigan football star issues groveling apology after leaked group chat messages of him criticizing coaches

Michigan tight end Zack Marshall has apologized for creating ‘unnecessary drama’ after leaked messages showed him slamming his Wolverines coaches.

The embarrassing messages, which came from a group chat and appeared on social media following Michigan’s loss to Minnesota on Saturday, showed Marshall criticizing offensive coordinator Jason Beck and his scheme.

He claimed Beck had gathered all the team’s tight ends and ‘told us none of us are valuable to this offense.’

Marshall also claimed Michigan are struggling against blitz defenses because the team is running ‘different versions of the power read on every play.’

In another message, the tight end defended under fire quarterback Bryce Underwood, insisting he is a ‘good’ player but that ‘Beck is a problem.’

After the messages went viral, Marshall posted an apology to social media.

How should teams handle players who air dirty laundry and criticize coaches in private messages?

‘Last weekend, in the hours after we lost, I made some inappropriate comments that I regret,’ Marshall posted Tuesday to X.

‘The game is won and lost as a team, and I pointed fingers instead of taking accountability. I let my frustrations speak for me in an emotional moment. I apologize to my teammates and coaches for the unnecessary drama that this has caused.’

Michigan is 3-2 (0-2) heading into Saturday’s showdown against Penn State. In Kyle Whittingham’s first season in charge, the Wolverines rank outside the top 100 nationally in scoring (105th) and yards per game (122nd).

Whittingham admitted after the 20-14 loss to Minnesota that the performances of his offense are ‘unacceptable.’ He also warned that ‘some tough decisions’ could be on the way.
