Kylian Mbappe’s latest injury with Real Madrid has become a source of controversy, with pundits questioning the striker over his treatment of the knee problem that he suffered with France.
Mbappe was taken off after sustaining the problem while scoring the only goal in Les Bleus’ victory over Turkey last Friday. It prompted him to withdraw from the national team’s forthcoming fixtures against Italy and Belgium and saw him miss the 1-0 victory over the Belgians on Monday.
But while the initial reports in Madrid are positive, the striker continues to find himself in the spotlight over the problem.
Mbappe injury ‘mystery’ explained
France boss Zinedine Zidane initially expressed serious concerns about the nature of the problem, telling the media: “It’s not good, unfortunately.”
Real Madrid released a statement on the injury that read: “Following tests carried out today by Real Madrid’s medical team on our player Kylian Mbappe, a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee has been diagnosed. His condition will be closely monitored.”
The belief in Spain is, therefore, that Mbappe has avoided a serious problem and will not need surgery. Indeed, this is said to have come as a surprise in Madrid, where they had anticipated him missing out for several weeks.
But Mbappe’s decision to return to Paris has caused a stir in Spain, with the striker spotted with girlfriend Ester Exposito in the French capital.
El Chiringuito reports that the forward has not been present at Real Madrid’s training base in Valdebebas for two days.
“It’s a mystery. He arrives injured from France but isn’t getting treatment in the city where he plays,” journalist Marcos Benito reported.
Mbappe’s tense relationship with Real Madrid’s medical staff
Mbappe’s injury issues at Real Madrid have been a source of controversy in the recent past.
In March, Mbappe was at odds with the medical staff of the club when it was reported that they had scanned the wrong knee when trying to diagnose a problem.
Respected RMC journalist Daniel Riolo reported: “The doctor’s first surprise was seeing that there hadn’t been a clinical examination. And that’s pretty crazy. No clinical examination, that’s the first surprise, then the error by scanning the wrong knee, which is kind of mind-boggling.
“Mbappe’s camp were perplexed and can’t understand how something like that could happen.
“That’s the biggest thing that everyone’s talking about in Spain today. People are wondering what could have happened if he’d pushed it, if his knee had given way completely and his thigh too.”
Mbappe told the media: “My knee’s doing very well. I’ve recovered 100%. I was lucky enough to get the right diagnosis when I went back to Paris, and together we were able to find the best plan to get back to my best level, to be in shape for the end of the season with Real Madrid and at the World Cup.”
This led to former Real Madrid nutritionist Itziar Gonzalez claiming that the medical staff at the club were using the free version of ChatGPT for key aspects of their work.
While Mbappe has not commented publicly on his return to Paris following his latest knee injury, the striker clearly has faith in the medical advice that he’s been given in his hometown, while that is not necessarily the case in Madrid.
