Even at the age of 21, and with his career still very much in its infancy, Henry Pollock has already ticked off some hugely impressive achievements.
He has already won the English Premiership and was named man of the match as he inspired Northampton Saints to beat Exeter Chiefs in last season’s final at Twickenham.
He has already been part of a victorious British and Irish Lions team and was the youngest member of their squad for the tour of Australia last year.
He very nearly won the Champions Cup as well, with Northampton losing narrowly to Bordeaux in the final in the season before last.
A world-class talent with outrageous speed for a back-rower and genuinely game-breaking abilities on both sides of the ball, he deserves his lucrative new contract with Northampton.
After weeks of negotiations and hints that he could be open to leaving the club, Pollock has finally signed a new multi-year extension that will see him paid around £450,000 per season.

Northampton – and, indeed, England – can breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing that the boy wonder and their prized asset will be staying put until 2029 at the very least.
But the obvious sense of relief should not obscure the wider issue. Quite simply, does Pollock want to be a rugby player or a social media content creator?
He would probably argue that he can be both. That may well be true to an extent but there will come a time in his career when he needs to find the right balance.
Listen, as a player, Pollock is a phenomenon. That much is beyond dispute. He has a truly unique skillset that few players in world rugby could match.
He is absolutely box-office. In the Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield earlier this year, he could be seen cupping his ears on the sideline as he warmed-up as Scotland fans made him public enemy No1.
Rugby needs characters like Pollock. He enriches the sport not only because of his ability, but also because of his personality.
After his breakthrough with Northampton and the Lions last year, there were countless reports of kids wearing headbands and asking their parents if they could dye their hair bleach blond.
Pollock’s reach and profile gives oxygen to a sport which for too long has struggled to sell its star players and reach new audiences.
His previous deal with Northampton was believed to be around the £150,000 mark. Trebling that is a fair reflection of his rapid rise to stardom.
But all of this comes with a caveat. Pollock’s profile, turbocharged by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom management agency, has started to feel like a double-edged sword at times.
Never one to under-sell any of his clients, Hearn boldly declared Pollock to be a ‘seven-figure player’ and felt that a salary of £1million per year shouldn’t be out of the question.
The commercial value, the shirt sales, the bums on seats, the viewership – all legitimate talking points.
Hearn was merely doing his job. Finn Russell, the other star rugby name in the Matchroom stable, is on roughly £1million per year at Bath as the marquee player whose wages sit outside the salary cap.

The comparison was inevitable but, for a 21-year-old with only a small – albeit impressive – body of work, probably unrealistic.
Chasing a contract of £1million-a-season in a capped league where no English club could realistically make Pollock the marquee exception was always going to hit the buffers.
Prior to signing his new deal, Pollock hinted recently that he could be open to offers from elsewhere and, eventually, there might well come a time in his career when he fancies a huge payday abroad.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Sport, Hearn spoke about Pollock leaving hundreds of thousands of pounds on the table compared to what he could have earned elsewhere. France and Japan are obvious destinations.
But the smart move for now was to stay with Northampton. The challenge for over these next few years will be to find the balance between rugby, winning more trophies with club and country, whilst continuing all of his stuff on social media.
What Pollock does on social media has already divided opinion. Schalk Burger, the former South Africa back-rower and World Cup winner, branded him a ‘TikTok dancer who plays some rugby on the weekend’.
Ouch. Coming from a certain generation of Springbok, it was perhaps no surprise that Burger, a player to whom Pollock had been likened, took such a dim view of his extra-curricular activities.
But this is exactly the kind of narrative the young England star should be careful of fuelling too much. His career should not be turned into a soap opera on social media.
Hearn’s involvement is not the problem. Boxing promotion has always understood the power of the individual. Rugby has been too polite, too collective, too reluctant to let stars shine for too long.
In the interview with Daily Mail Sport, Hearn revealed his plans to ‘blow up’ the sport and completely reinvent it. The likes of Russell and Pollock would be at the forefront of his revolution.
In the case of Pollock, a player who can drive ticket sales and put the sport in front of people who would never otherwise watch is undeniably valuable.
The back-rower has made a strong early impression with England
Northampton’s director of rugby Phil Dowson was right to embrace the ambition while quietly reminding everyone that budgets exist and squads have to fit inside them. The happy medium has been found, at least for now.
What matters next is focus. Pollock is still a pup in the grand scheme of things. The body is young, the career is young, the habits are still being formed.
Spending too much time polishing the personal brand, chasing the next viral social media clip, treating the rugby as the side hustle rather than the main event – that is how promising careers plateau.
The Premiership is unforgiving. International rugby even more so. The 2027 World Cup cycle is already well underway, with the tournament now only 12 months away.
England will need him sharp, consistent, and available. Northampton will need him leading the charge as they try to defend their Premiership title and go further in Europe.
Pollock is a superstar. It would be a shame if, in ten years’ time, his highlights reel featured more TikTok videos than tries, trophies or tackles. Only he can shape how all of this pans out.
